A look inward may be difficult, but it is necessary for real growth
In my previous post on taking your work home with you, I mentioned that I serve on the Inclusion and Diversity Committee of Metro United Way. I also stated how I feel it is important to take the ideas of being inclusive and truly respect others, despite their differences with you. To do that you have to take a look within. To take an honest self assessment of the hang-ups, ideas and yes- even prejudices that cause us to distance ourselves one from another.
The Inclusion and Diversity Team has worked long and hard to develop Metro United Way’s organizational definition of diversity, inclusion and cultural competency. We see the need as an organization to make sure these ideals are valued at Metro United Way. Our leadership team sees the importance of making these ideals active parts of our business plan. It is important that our staff, volunteers, committee members, donors and partners reflect the rich differences within our community.
I think it goes without saying that Metro United Way is most certainly a leader in our community. I believe we are in a unique position to build relationships with so many different types of people, groups and causes. But to do that we have to know where we as an organization are. Do we really look like our community? Do we, as an organization, really hold to these values of inclusion and cultural competency?
In trying to determine this, our organization has taken a bold step. We are currently conducting an internal assessment with an independent consultant. The goal of this assessment is to determine what Metro United Way looks like as an organization. We are looking inward, to determine our outward effectiveness. Looking inward can be just as difficult for an organization as it is for individuals. It means you unveil some not so pretty things about yourself. You also get to see what you are doing right. More importantly, it is an opportunity to identify our strengths and weaknesses and develop strategies around making things different.
We are in the beginning stages of defining who and what Metro United Way will be going forward. We will be an organization that values, respects and honors differences. We will be an organization that is inviting and welcoming to all. We can partner with those who hold different beliefs. Our mantra of ”Live United” takes on a much deeper meaning when we act in this way.
